Ferns, Marshall Gulch

Ferns, Marshall Gulch

Ferns are in full force in Marshall Gulch, my favorite trail in the Santa Catalinas.  The parking area is closed off. Presumably the powers that be are going to fix up the road that leads to the trailhead.  If you do go, expect an extra half mile walk to the actual trailhead.  Columbines are just starting to bloom.

Mountain Empire Wine and Dine This Weekend

Santa Ritas

Santa Ritas

If you have no plans for this weekend (June 20-21), check out the Mountain Empire Wine and Dine down in Patagonia, Sonoita, and Elgin.  There’s lots of stuff happening.  And stop by Creative Spirit Artists in Patagonia to check out some of my photography for sale down there.  They’re having a weekend sale to help celebrate the weekend.

Elemental Artistry

Filed under: Uncategorized — Laurent @ 10:51 am

A few months ago, for something different, I photographed some fire spinners.  I made a couple posts from that work.  Recently, I discovered they had their website, Elemental Artistry,  up and it’s chock full of images from yours truly.  I’m flattered that they liked the images – I think they turned out well too.  These girls were a pleasure to work with and were both fun and professional.  If you have an event that could use a “spark,”  consider them as they are all phenomenal performers.

Saguaros, On Guard

Saguaros, On Guard

Another from my last batch of black and white experimentation.  Photographed on Ilford FP4. Like in the last post, the development is a little patchy.  I’ll need to mix my chemicals a bit better.  And a thanks to Michael Gordon for the tip on trying to get the temperature of my chemicals down (check his site out, he has some new images).  I followed the directions for processing at 73 degrees since that’s as cold as I could get my water.  Need more ice packs!

Badlands

Badlands

Badlands

This would be one of six first attempts at a black and white image.  Keep in mind, I’m just learning this skill. I exposed this image just north of Lake Powell on Ilford FP4 and developed the image in a HP Combiplan tank.  I have to use icepacks to cool down the cold tap water to 73 degrees.  Would you believe my cold water is about 83-4 degrees?

I’ve always been fascinated with badlands.  I had the luck of having some smeary clouds midday, and while I never make color images in open midday light, I thought the light to be appropriate for black and white.  I like the way this turned out, though there are mistakes.  For one, the edges where less exposed than the middle.  For another, I didn’t turn the tank while the fixer was in, so I got a queer line through the image.  I repaired it in photoshop on this image, but it’s unfixable in some of the other images.

I’m somewhat amused by my desire to work “backwards” from the digital age. I’m looking forward to this journey I’m embarking on and seeing what images I create from this process.
