Mather Point, Grand Canyon, Arizona

I’ve never gone to the Grand Canyon just to photograph.  Well, that’s not true.  I tried a couple of years ago in the dead of winter.  It was cold, snowing, and the park wouldn’t allow vehicles in that weren’t four wheel drive.  They didn’t say anything about your vehicles heater being broken.  Mine was broken.  I couldn’t handle it, I fled for warmer climes down south.  A couple days ago I saw monsoon was trying not to go away so I decided to play hookey from work and run up to the canyon.  It really is incredibly beautiful, but I was torn not being prepared not to head down in.  Sometimes when I do photography like this, like a tourist, I feel like a spectator rather than a participant.  I’d much rather have been donning a 50lb pack to head down than just sitting at the rim.  Still…what magic to just sit and watch the play of light over a truly magnificent place.

  3. You could loose yourself in a photo like this. I feel I was sitting with you on the rim.

  4. I know what you’re saying about feeling like a spectator rather than a participant. I was on the North Rim last weekend and found myself wanting, no, needing to be down in the canyon. The rim is wonderful but there is nothing like immersing yourself in your surroundings, especially at the canyon.

  5. I hear you, Adam. If you ever get a trip together to head down in there, let me know, I’ll join. I’ll do the same!
